Have a wonderful break!
Hello parents,
I wanted to post and say a big thank you for the wonderful presents, cards, and general support this term. This is such a lovely and special class and a real joy to teach! Next term is massively important as we continue to give Year 1 the best possible start to their school life, and the reading skills they use for the rest of their lives. I am coming at them with everything I’ve got next term so lets all enjoy our rest and have fun.
I have sent home a mini-report centred on my observations on each child’s reading based on the assessments this month. Overall, the sound knowledge aspect is well ahead of schedule (fantastic!). I want to work more on applying this fluency into their reading next term, including reading multisyllabic words, and building speedy readers.
Have a lovely Christmas/holiday/season! I’m looking forward to seeing everyone when we are back.
P.S. I have spoken to the class about the danger with ice in response to the terrible news recently.

Making Rights Happen – Rights Respecting School
Well done to Year 4 for winning both the attendance and punctuality award last week! 99.7% attendance during w/c 28.11.22, along with only accruing a single late mark! Year 6 also had great punctuality! #WJISRR 📈📅✔️⏰

Hello! Thank you for all of the wonderful costumes! The children will be doing a Dress Rehearsal to the school on Monday 12th December and they will be performing to parents on Wednesday 14th @ 2pm.

Christmas Fair
Today your child has been sent home with a small paper bag. Woodthorpe Friends would be grateful if you could fill it with a small gift, ready for our lucky dip stall at the Christmas Fair on 15th December. Some ideas for a gift could be stationary, hair ties, bouncy ball, fidget toy, small colouring book or crafts, balloons etc. Once filled please return to school via your teacher by Wed 14th December. We appreciate your support.

Writing, Shapes, assessment, and boxes…
Good evening parents!
I wanted to use this blog post as an opportunity to celebrate and share all the work we have been doing in Y1 in our core subjects: Maths and English.
In English, Red group have been working on constructing words using simple digraphs and developing their knowledge of letter formation and basic sentence grammar. Check out a glimpse into their work below!
In Purple group, the children are developing their ‘hold a sentence’ skills and using their own ideas to creatively produce ‘big writes’ inspired by the text they have been reading. Self-assessment is being used to guide each child towards where their writing needs improving and what they need to remember. Check it out!
In Orange group, the children have been developing and improving upon their ‘big writes’ in order to add better description and use extended sentences. There has been a lot of discussion around adjective, nouns, and verbs and their place in our writing. We have also looked at different punctuation and their uses in adding emphasis to our writing. I have super impressed with the growth in writing of all the children. Keep it up superstars!

In Maths, our focus has been on shape. We began by identifying the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and then, using our knowledge of these shapes, we have been sorting them using a range of table and venn diagrams. Check out the wonderful work!

Last week we completed the first Maths, Reading, and GAPS assessments for Y1. I am really pleased with how the class reacted to the challenge of the assessments and the effort each child put in. I am going to complete the phonics assessments starting on Wednesday so their will be new groups starting after the Christmas break. I am aiming for every child to have a sound knowledge of set 2 sounds in sound and word form, so please revise these with your child! Set 3 sounds and words are a bonus too!
